The gameHERs is a women-led community dedicated to amplifying and centering the voices of women gamers and gamers of marginalized genders, who are comfortable in spaces that center women. Their mission is to advance the role, voice, image, and power of all the*gameHERs in the gaming world. 

“We decided to build a community where women who game could come together and interact and feel included, and also have that community exist as a media platform to amplify all of the positives that exist already because there are a lot of women in gaming doing incredible things!” says Rebecca Dixon who is one of the four co-founders of thegameHERs.

The founding parents of COPE have had a unique perspective of the value of esports for youth success through their own children who have excelled in professional esports. Like any parent they were initially skeptical of too much screen time and too little contact with grass. The media has spent 30 years telling us that screen time is bad, that games make kids anti-social, and that some may even make them violent. Reputable studies have debunked all these myths, yet the fear remains. Parents are criticized and guilted for allowing our kids to game. Relationships between parent and child are strained as they battle over time spent at a console or PC. Kids feel misunderstood, and the digital divide between parents and gamers widens. 
 
COPE advocates for breaking that unhealthy cycle. Online gaming today really is more than playing video games in your parent’s basement. Our kids are embracing the technology of their generation and learning how to make it work for them for fun, sport, and connection. Instead of trying to limit what they enjoy, COPE strives to help parents embrace it and work with their children to ensure they get the most out of their experiences. Just like any social group or activity, there is always the possibility of negative interactions, but with parent involvement, children will be equipped to face those challenges and will be confident to ask you, their parents, for help and guidance. 
 
We encourage listening to your child, engaging in their online social world, and spectating their games. We highly encourage playing games with them. With adequate equipment, planned schedules and skilled coaching, gamers learn resilience, team building, strategy, and time management just like any sport. Most importantly they build bonds with like minded peers and even with parents when we support their activities and demonstrate our pride in their achievements. 
 
**Esports Fact:** The ecosystem around online gaming teaches valuable behaviors that go beyond being exceptional at a video game. Kids are learning marketable business skills like networking, marketing and accounting. While very few will reach the upper echelons of pro gaming, many will find other interests in the gaming and metaverse communities that might shape their education and career paths. Esports is an exploding industry with varied careers in financial, legal, technical, medical, creative spaces, and many other exciting opportunities. 
 
**Esports Fact:** 80% of kids currently involved in esports programs through their schools or communities would have not participated in any other extracurricular activity. The benefits of participation in school sports are well-known for the mental and physical development of our youth. Esports is reaching kids previously excluded from these important developmental experiences. 
 
**Esports Fact:** It is a sport with practice and tournaments. Print and post schedules. Plan tournaments with adequate rest, nutrition, and practice. 
 
**Esports Fact:** Fitness is important! Like any sport, physical and mental strength and endurance is critical for success. Any good program will include and encourage daily workouts and mind exercises to improve your game. Ensure your child learns that peak physical and mental health is key to success and protection against injury. All that time sitting and doing repetitive motions will take a toll. COPE has wellness partner resources with free videos and programs. 
 
**Esports Fact:** Passion is good. We expect inside voices when playing video games, but we yell and woop right along with them on a sports field. Managing anger is a learned skill that improves their performance, but don’t get angry at their passion for wanting to do their best. Provide punch pillows or squishy balls to let off anger AND to protect controllers, headsets, and even screens! 
 
**Esports Fact:** Twitter, Discord and Twitch allow parents too. Get on board. COPE will show you how. Keeping your kids safe and getting the most out of experiences means being present, in the physical world and virtual worlds. Get involved, but don't hover. Teens learn best when we are the backbone behind them, not the shield in front of them. 
 
So, as a parent, aunt, uncle or grandparent, what can you do? *Get involved.* Take the opportunity to let your kids teach you about their favorite games, their favorite platforms and their favorite pros and streamers. Yes, we know they might try to gate keep you. When did that ever stop you? It shouldn’t here either. Get to know their online friends just like you would their school friends. Learn enough to spectate and cheer their tournaments. COPE feels that when parents learn how much their children benefit from healthy, fun and interactive gaming, esports will truly become the next big thing. Your kids are already there. Advice for parents from COPE founders Chris Spikoski and Shae Williams!

COPE Corner for Parents

The gaming industry in the past decade saw more children starting to have aspirations of pursuing professional careers in gaming or of playing esports professionally. Unlike many traditional sports, gamers have the opportunity to compete at high levels from a very young age. A recent notable example of this was in 2019 when 16 year-old gamer Kyle Giersdorf (Bugha) won the Fortnite World Cup and the $3 million dollar prize that came with it!

While more and more young adults and children are starting to have aspirations of playing esports professionally, achieving this goal is just as competitive as pursuing a career in any other sport. Middle schools, high schools, and colleges around the world are also starting to develop extensive esports programs and scholarships.

We are extremely excited to be partnered with the <a href="https://cope.gg/" target="_blank">The Coalition of Parents in Esports (COPE)</a>, a nonprofit charity led by the parents of professional gamers and content creators dedicated to helping parents navigate and understand the positive aspects of gaming and esports! COPE’s mission is to remove the negative stigmas, educate parents, raise awareness, provide resources to make esports feel rewarding, and provide scholarships to aspiring athletes.

We had a chance to sit down with Chris Spikoski, CEO of COPE - and the father of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYGfeI0m7Q-JQ_5N7NL79vA" target="_blank">professional gamer Sceptic</a> - about his experience as a parent supporting his son’s esports aspirations so that his advice may be able to help other parents in our community!

Chris is an avid gamer himself, and spent time playing games like Mario Kart with his son from a very young age. As Sceptic began taking competitive and professional esports more and more seriously, and as he started streaming and building an online presence, Chris was always there to help and support him. “I was in his Discord as a moderator,” says Spikoski. “If anything did pop up where he needed help, he would be sure to let me know to jump in and help him navigate it. It was all about just playing with him, being involved with him, letting him know I was there with him. Same things as traditional sports.”

One of the most important aspects of the support Chris provided for Sceptic was showing the same respect for the activity as he would any other traditional sport or hobby. “I was very involved, but also very respectful when he had scrimmages or practice going on with his team,” says Spikoski. “When your kids are in basketball and they're out on the court practicing, you are not going to run out there and say, ‘hey it's time for dinner!’ You are gonna be respectful of their time on the court practicing with the team.”

We asked Chris what advice he had for parents who want to be more involved in their children’s gaming experience and here's what he had to say: “Set up a console down in the family room, and just have your kid show you how to play! Even if you aren't good! It's kind of eye opening when you do get to sit down and play with your kids and have them teach you. As parents we are always trying to find a way to teach our kids as opposed to taking a step back and having them teach us. I have learned a lot from my kid over the years that has been very valuable to help build a connection with him.”

COPE is a non-profit foundation created by parents of gamers for parents of gamers. COPE was founded by three parents of professional gamers - Shae WIlliams, Chris Spikoski, and Dave Herzog - who want to share their stories supporting and managing their children’s gaming experiences and ambitions.

GGLeagues and COPE look to “revolutionize esports by getting parents involved”, and hopes to help families learn from the experiences of professional gamers’ parents.

February Education: Parenting and Gaming

As video games have grown more and more popular in recent years, video game addiction has become a topic of increased interest for parents, gamers, and researchers alike. In 2013, <a href="https://www.who.int/news/item/14-09-2018-inclusion-of-gaming-disorder-in-icd-11" target="_blank">“internet gaming disorder” was classified in the DM5</a> and in 2019, The World Health Organization added “gaming disorder” to the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). The ICD-11 defines gaming disorder as the following: 
- A pattern of gaming behavior characterized by a lack of control over gaming.
- Prioritizing gaming over other interests and daily activities
- Continuing to play games despite the occurrence of negative consequences.
 

Our educational partner, <a href="https://www.healthygamer.gg/" target="_blank">Healthy Gamer</a>, believes “Video game addiction is a behavioral addiction, which means it has different triggers, manifestations, and underlying causes”, says Kabir Lal a community manager at Healthy Gamer.

There are many signs that can help you determine if someone close to you may be suffering from gaming addiction. According to Healthy Gamer, some of these signs can include:
- Preoccupation with video games.
- Being unable to stop playing video games when needed.
- Being unable to cut back on time spent playing games.
- Prioritizing gaming over other parts of your life.
- Problems with daily functioning.
- Compromised physical or mental health.
- Deteriorating relationships as a result of too much gaming.
- Inability to move forward in life due to time spent gaming.
 

But just how much gaming is too much gaming? According to our partner Healthy Gamer, Gaming addiction often presents itself in <a href="https://www.healthygamer.gg/blog/stages-of-video-game-addiction" target="_blank">three stages</a>:
1. You play video games for several hours and have fun.
2. You play video games for several hours, but you don’t have as much fun. They still help you improve your mood.
3. You play video games for several hours, but they are neither fun nor do they improve your mood.
 

Gaming addiction has a lot of interesting effects on the actual chemistry of the brain as well. Video games can be addictive for many reasons, but Healthy Gamer defines some of the biggest reasons as:
- They stimulate our brain’s pleasure centers and cause the secretion of dopamine.
- Games engage the Triumph Circuit in our brain and allow us to feel challenged and victorious.
- Video games suppress negative emotions, and they become an excellent way to cope with negative emotions and therefore result in dependency.

Educational insight from Healthy Gamer on the effects gaming has on the chemistry of the brain, and some of the history behind "gaming disorder"!

Gaming and Addiction

Gaming and Esports, much like any other sport or hobby, require self-control and balance in all aspects of life in order to be successful and have fun while participating in these activities. Gaming can often be clouded by negative stigmas, but as our understanding of the benefits of esports continues to grow, more and more schools and institutions are beginning to incorporate esports into their programming. <a href="https://www.npr.org/2020/01/24/798172352/as-esports-take-off-high-school-leagues-get-in-the-game" target="_blank">According to a recent NPR article</a>, more than 170 colleges and universities have created esports teams with more than $16 million being offered in esports scholarships. High schools and middle schools across the country have started to develop their esports programs as well, with some of the big high school tournaments having hundreds of schools across the country facing off in various esports titles.

For young gamers playing esports recreationally or competitively, mental health and wellness are crucial to maintain a work-play balance and prevent gaming from negatively affecting other aspects of their lives. “Some of the negative aspects that parents really notice are [young gamers] may start to lose interest in having a good relationship with other family members, or disengaging from other activities they used to find enjoyment from”, says Hannah Dam, the Resources Manager at Healthy Gamer. “Say they used to go play tennis a lot and now they no longer think it's interesting and they spend a lot more time indoors. Other examples include slips in grades and declining motivation.”

Esports have been shown to have a variety of positive effects on cognitive development for children. According to a <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2020.00235/full" target="_blank">study from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya</a>, people who played video games growing up as kids show improved capacity in their working memory when compared to those who didn’t play video games. “Gaming gives kids a safe space to be who they want to be without fear of judgement,” says Dam. “Being able to interact with friends that support you for who you are is incredibly validating. It provides them with a sense of community in connecting with people who have similar interests. It also provides them with a sense of achievement and challenge that's to their own tastes.”
